![]() ![]() But if that changes in a few years and more applications can use more cores then there would be a meaningful 20% gain and at that point i would wish i kept the 10 cores. The extra cores for most applications seem to limit to 6 cores looking at activity monitor. But seems like rosetta 2 doesn’t really know to make use of more than 6-8 cores and usually prioritize the efficiency cores. For final cut the encoder does most of the work so cpu doesn’t matter as much. Apple 8 core mac pro pro#For optimized apps like logic pro it does make difference but i don’t use logic. But i wonder how much of that fault is due to poor optimization of most applications. If i were to downgrade to 8/14 i know right now there probably wont be a huge difference in most tasks and i save $270 after apple education savings and upgrading ssd and power adapter (basically free apple care). Apple 8 core mac pro upgrade#TLDR: buy the base 14” model and save the extra budget for an upgrade years down the line Apple 8 core mac pro archive#In my case I have a work archive of 250gb so the 512gb will be enough but you mileage may vary, only you know how much space you need of course. Regarding the SSD, I usually buy one big enough to store all my files and then double it up so to leave space for swap and not have to stress about running out of space if you decide to store music+movies+photos or other documents. Save the $$$ from the ram and instead put them on a saving account to buy a new MacBook 5 years down the line, it will benefit you much more than having an unused 32gb of ram for those 5 years. I suggest you don’t go for 32gb of ram for future proofing as by the time that becomes “not enough” ( IF you ever hit that wall) there will be much more modern and powerful machines. I did some testing on M1 MacBook Air and it runs everything flawlessly, so the base Pro 14” with 16gb ram and the 8 core M1 Pro will be plenty powerful for years to come. From what I understand from your post your workflow will be less demanding than that. ![]() I consider it a fairly demanding workflow and my 2018 15” MacBook Pro with a 6 core cpu struggles with it but 16gb of ram were never an issue and memory pressure rarely goes on “yellow”. My work files are usually 500mb to 1.5gb in size. Not sure if can help you make a decision: I’m planning to buy a 14” for heavy illustration in Photoshop ( use of textured live brushed on 5k canvases with an average of 50 layers) and illustrator ( 100s of shapes with gradients, textures, noise ) all while connected to an iPad Pro 12.9 as graphic tablet. ![]()
